What Are the Different Types of Perfume Notes?

Understanding perfume notes can make shopping for fragrance much easier. Most perfumes are built
around three main stages: top notes, middle notes, and base notes.
Top notes are the first scents you notice after spraying a perfume. They are often fresh and bright,
featuring ingredients such as citrus, herbs, or light fruits. Middle notes, also called heart notes, appear
as the top notes fade and form the main character of the fragrance. Floral, fruity, and aromatic
ingredients are common here.
Base notes develop more slowly and can remain on the skin for many hours. Common examples
include vanilla, musk, amber, woods, leather, and oud.
This development is why a perfume can smell different immediately after application compared with
several hours later.
When testing a new fragrance, give it time to develop on your skin before deciding whether you like it.
